Slapped into Gratitude

Gratitude for the gifts we possess can jolt us back to reality, especially in moments of unhappiness. This truth struck me vividly recently as I drove home, brooding over my performance in a game of Astro soccer. Consumed by frustration at my perceived inadequacy in the game, a simple sight shifted my entire perspective—a man with a disability, laboriously making his way home, burdened with bags and laptop after his day in university.

There I was, stewing in my car over a soccer game, while this man exhibited unimaginable strength, enduring daily struggles that I could only imagine. The contrast was stark, and suddenly, my frustrations seemed trivial. I was reminded of the immense blessings in my life—the ability to move freely, to engage in sports, to interact with other men and be sociable . How often do I take these gifts for granted?

Observing him, a wave of guilt washed over me for not consistently acknowledging the blessings of my physical capabilities, for the simple joys of meeting friends or driving home unaided. His perseverance is not only a testament to his strength but also a blessing to those of us privileged to witness it.

Sometimes you need a wake up call to the blessings in your life.

Reflecting on his journey, I pondered—does he harbor anger or feel unloved? Does he feel isolated in his challenges? Despite the potential hardships, there he was, persisting, moving forward each day with a resilience that commands admiration. The ease with which I navigate my daily life—unencumbered walks, driving, fretting over trivial concerns like a performance in a game—stood in sharp contrast to the obstacles he might face.

It's easy to lose sight of the bigger picture. Yet, this encounter reminded me of how blessed I am. Blessed with the gift of mobility, of unburdened participation in life's simple pleasures. While I may never fully understand why life's burdens are distributed so unevenly, recognising and appreciating my own blessings is the least I can do.

Take a moment to reflect 🤔

Choose one physical action you performed with ease this week—perhaps walking up stairs, drying off after a shower, or simply moving around comfortably—and take a moment to deeply appreciate this ability.

God Bless 🙏
